May the 4th be with you

Hope is like the sun.
If you only believe in it when you can see it,
you will never make it through the night.
— General Leia Organa, Star Wars

While the Star Wars galaxy has its imperfections and the metaphors are sometimes trite (destroying big evil), there is something that draws me back to this unforgiving intergalactic world, and that is hope. The resistance and the rebellion are always out there working together to make the galaxy safer and more whole for all creatures. Throughout the series there are beautiful narratives around the power of organizing in the face of great odds, looking within oneself for your own source of power, and grappling with the nuance of the long arc of justice.

As I was reflecting today, here are some hopes I am offering and working towards so that our world can be more caring and nuanced…

Star Wars Day

Text on the poster:

May SCOTUS and legislators get out of our uteruses, and into supporting families in real and meaningful ways

May the pandemic be taken seriously and masking be an act of kindness

May our chronically ill and disabled sibs be cared for by systems and community

May the wars across the world that threaten humanity and justice end, and accountability enacted with those hoarding power

May our communities seek and attain abolition from systems and practices that have long harmed us

May Black lives be cherished and honored

May the land be returned to native and indigenous peoples, and may this planet Earth be cared for for many generations

May trans and non-binary youth and elders be seen, protected, and loved

May the Resistance and the Rebellion for a better world (galaxy) continue

May we find moments of healing and joy in each and every day
